Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?

link preview on facebook

For instance, if you own and love Weimaraners, can you tell right away if other people's Weims are of good or bad quality? Obviously, most average dogs you see will be pet quality, but can you tell how closely they meet the standard for their breed?

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
In my breed of Choice yes and maybe in some other breeds like Great Danes. But i have seen at least five greyhound looking Dobermans and with their proportions very wrong. and they always say and ask me if my Dobermans are from German lines and i told them that no they are from American lines but that if they wanted to see one with German lines and an import from Germany that they should come to see me around the middle of June so that they could see how a real Doberman with German lines looked. well apparently the "breeder" they got the dobe from told them that they had American lines but that if they wanted and European line doberman that it would be as twice as much so instead of being 600$ that it would be 1200$ It is just a crime to take advantage from people.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
I can tell the difference between show and field bred in English springers, German shorthairs and German wirehairs. Field bred dogs don't necessarily fit the show standard at all. In fact, to many people they look like two different breeds when pictured side by side. It is so sad that the interpretation of the standards is so broad that there are different types of the same breed that look so differently. However just because the dog doesn't meet the show standard doesn't mean that the dog is poorly bred. It might be a dog form working lines. Ask a working border collie breeder what a good working border collie is supposed to look like. They'll tell you how the dog is supposed to work.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
Definitely, With Bloodhounds.. I can tell RIGHT off the bat.. if they are purebred.. or worthy of being bred, or just a good quality family pet. The standard calls for very loose skin falling off their bones, with SQUARED elbows and joints. Also, very squared flews (lips) and their ears MUST reach to the tip of their nose, even better.. beyond the nose. And the tops of their head must be the same "peak" as their muzzle.. For example, if the angle on the head is at 8 degrees.. their muzzle must be peaked around that exact same peak. Also, There has to be a very loose hanging pendulum like neck Also.. it is very important that their tail is help up high.. I know a lot of people who think a dog's tail goes up high just when he or she is happy.. But it does say a lot towards a very good structured dog. I see Bloodhounds (not very often.. but the ones I DO see that arent mine.. or my previous puppies..) Some of the hounds I see have either VERY short ears (and are supposedly AKC purebreds) also some of them are not wrinkly what so ever.. which obviously is not only a big part of the breed standard.. but initially.. Bloodhounds have that thick, loose hanging skin so they can burrow through bushes and through the woods while on the run for a rescue.

An excellent breed type show line Dobermann? Yes. In a b*tch I look for a feminine elegant body, with a correct wedge shaped head, strong flowing correct movement, with a steady confident temperament. I can pick out a dog bred by the breeder of my current b*tch at a glance. Now ask me to assess a working line Dobermanns ability to do the type of work it would originally created to do & I would be hopelessly out of my depth & yelling for an experienced professional dog trainer :))

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
I'm no german shepherd expert, but I can look and tell that most german shepherds are poorly bred. The poorly bred american and german lines are far different looking from working lines. Now, could I look at a working lined dog and tell if it was of quality or not? NO. lol. There have been several dogs that I though looked amazing, and then I was told they weren't that great of dogs.

Hmm sort of, no good with show dogs, but I can tell whether or not a Working Springer will make a good working dog and whether it is from good lines.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
Nope. And I have no trouble saying that when we picked our puppy we worked closely with our breeder to make sure the puppy we got was the right one for our family. Ironically, the first pup we picked was the sire's owner's first choice, the second pup we picked was the breeder's first choice and the pup we picked had excellent conformation (except for his tail) and would have been the breeder's first choice if he wasn't blue.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
Mine is Great Dane. And I'm VERY much into knowing conformation with them. So yes, usually at a first glance I can see if they are show or pet quality. Unfortunately, when they're puppies, I'm not the *best* at evaluating them yet. But as adults, I'd say I have a pretty keen eye. If you like a breed, shouldn't you know them? Although it's not mandatory I find it fun and useful!

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
Absolutely, especially the Gordons. I have studied the breed so extensively I can actually often tell BLOODLINES by looking at a dog.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
In general, yes. For example, we met a pair of Mini Schnauzers at the dog park today, and while they were both adorable, the male was definitely too rangy and leggy - in fact, I think he may have been mixed with something else. I also know that while Holli is a reasonably good example of the breed, Wyatt really isn't - his proportions are off.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
At a glance, yes. In my breed, the difference between a well-bred dog and one from pet/puppymill/byb lines is obvious. Even pet owners want to know why their dog doesn't look anything like mine. On Tuesday we were at the vet and a lady was looking at my girls and was surprised that they didn't have crooked legs. I said "they're not supposed to". Every other Basset she'd seen was of the fiddle-fronted, knock-kneed, easty-westy variety. EDIT: yes, like BYBs below, if the dog is well bred I can usually make a good guess as to which kennel it came from, or at least the bloodline.

Question on : Are you able to quickly tell whether a dog of your breed of choice is good quality?
Staffies I can. There are ones that genuinely look like Staffies and then ones that look more like miniature Boxers or Bulldogs. Weird-looking dogs.
